ESG score

The ESG score shows how a product compares with similar products on ESG criteria, giving you a starting point for ESG-aware purchasing decisions.

This article explains where we display the ESG score, how to filter search results by ESG score, what the colour coding means, and how the score is calculated.

ESG score in search and product selection

The ESG score is available on both the search results page and the product details page.

On the search results page, the ESG score is displayed in the column “ESG score”. You can sort items by ESG score, from highest to lowest.

You can use the ESG score filter to narrow down the search results and display only items with a specific ESG score range.

On the product detail page, the ESG score is shown in the product information section.

How the ESG score is calculated

The ESG score is a relative value. It shows how a product is rated against defined ESG criteria in comparison with other products in the same category.

The score is calculated in three steps:

Awarding points: Category-specific assessment criteria are applied to each product’s ESG data, producing a total points value for each product.

Identifying the top score: The highest total score within the product category is identified.

Deriving the ESG score: A product’s ESG score is its total points expressed as a percentage of the highest score in the category. The product with the highest total score receives a score of 100 and is ranked 1st.

Colour coding

The colour code distinguishes between three assessment ranges: green, yellow and red.

Data basis and methodology

Unite works with SUSTAYNR GmbH, an independent ESG product ratings provider, to display the ESG score.

ESG-Score.org updates category rankings and product ratings every two weeks, so the ESG score displayed on Unite reflect regularly updated product data.

The assessment criteria are defined for each product category. To do this, ESG-Score.org evaluates relevant standards and recognised certification requirements, maps individual criteria to a master catalogue and weights them using a materiality analysis. Specialists from the relevant product categories can also provide feedback on the selection and weighting of the criteria.

Manufacturers can review, correct or add to existing product data on ESG-Score.org. According to ESG-Score.org, this process is product-neutral and non-discriminatory.

ESG-Score.org states that it operates independently of payments from rated manufacturers. The service is funded through subscription fees from purchasing organisations and retailers that use ESG data and ratings. This model supports manufacturer-independent product ratings.
